Uninor offers free Wikipedia to its subscribers

Uninor, one of the leading telecom operators of India will give free access to Wikipedia across the nation. The move is aimed at introducing the subscribers to internet and to push the new digital medium of learning. The offer is currently available and will be valid for a duration of three months only. It can be accessed by the 45 million subscribers all over the country.

"By giving free access to Wikipedia, Uninor will be able to put this repository of knowledge in the hands of the masses and empower the society," Uninor's chief executive Vivek Sood said in a statement. The company plans to launch similar services in near future. To carry the movement forward Uninor will also engage with students and teachers to spread awareness about digital literacy and offering services like Wikipedia for free is a big step in that direction. Uninor offers free Wikipedia in other countries like Bangladesh, Montenegro, Thailand, Malaysia and Myanmar as well.

"By promoting free access to Wikipedia, Uninor is spreading awareness and opening doors to information to people who might otherwise not have access to it," said Carolynne Schloeder, director of Mobile Partnerships at the WikimediaFoundation.

The telecom company also offered a similar scheme for essential applications like Facebook and Whatsapp last year but now the company is trying to push the digital medium to educate people in countries like India and Bangladesh.

“By giving free access to Wikipedia, Uninor will be able to put this repository of knowledge in the hands of the masses and empower the society. The partnership will unleash the true potential of the Internet by giving access to unlimited information to our Internet users.” -VivekSood, CEO, Telewings Communications Services Pvt Ltd, Uninor said in a statement.

Uninor staff will be promoting this offer with students and teachers,with this campaign uninor targets to have its 50% internet users by 2017,The free wikipedia will be available for a period of 3 months starting from 1st April 2015.
